How to Identify Valuable WW2 Gallantry Awards

A collector's guide to recognising and valuing gallantry medals from the Second World War.

Recognising Gallantry Medals

Gallantry awards are among the most valuable and historically significant military medals. During World War II, several types of gallantry medals were awarded for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy.

The Victoria Cross (VC) remains the highest award, but other gallantry medals such as the Military Cross (MC), Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), and Military Medal (MM) are also highly prized by collectors.

Key Factors in Valuation

  • Citation: Medals with published citations command premium prices.
  • Rank and Unit: Awards to officers of prestigious regiments often carry higher values.
  • Theatre of War: Medals from certain campaigns are particularly sought after.
  • Condition: Original, unpolished medals in good condition are always more valuable.

Named Medals and Research

Unlike campaign medals, which were often issued unnamed, gallantry awards were typically engraved with the recipient's name, rank, and unit. This makes research far easier and adds tremendously to the historical value.
